International students who wish to pursue up to three programs of study in succession with recognized educational institutions on a single visa may apply for a pathway visa New Zealand.
A test project
In order to allow overseas students to study for up to 3 consecutive courses on a single student visa for up to 5 years, the pathway visa New Zealand pilot program was launched. Only certain courses of study and recognized Pathway education providers are eligible for the visa.
Present situation
Early in 2021, Immigration New Zealand intended to make the visa category permanent. It cannot become a permanent category until some time after the border has opened due to PSV qualifying rules.
The PSV guidelines as they are now will stand. Students in New Zealand or those who qualify for a PSV under a border exception may still receive help from providers who are a part of the PSV. No other educational institutions will be included in the program at this time.
What may be done by students on this visa
Depending on their course of study, students can: stay for up to 5 years; study up to 3 courses consecutively on a single student visa; work part-time for up to 20 hours per week while they are in school and full-time during the summer.
How it works for students
The duration of a pathway visa New Zealand is sufficient to finish a qualification plan.
Students must still fulfill the prerequisites for any second and third courses on their study pathway in order to remain in New Zealand while on a pathway student visa.
